Collaboration
X: On the
Contrary
Riverside Arts Project
The Riverside Arts Council introduces Collaboration X, a
new
collaborative
art group
originating through
RAC's
Riverside
Arts Project
gallery at
Riverside
Plaza. Through
inspiring
and
cultivating
creative
thought and
action, the
group hopes
to involve
and touch
the entire
community.
On the
Contrary
is the
group's
introductory
show. Its
theme plays
with
contradictions,
from life
and death to
water and
fire. Pairings
of artists
each take
one half
of a
contradictory
theme and
are
challenged
with
creating a
juxtaposition
that also
exists as
separate
work. The 10
members of
the group
are: Raymond
Argumedo,
Sydney
Atherton,
Nick Bahula,
Amanda
Millar,
Nathaniel
Osollo, Jeff
Ribaudo, Jon
Roach
Brosius,
Rick
Rodriguez,
Arnold
Romero and
Rachael
Dzikonski,
Program
Manager of
the
Riverside
Arts Council
and Curator
of the
Riverside
Arts
Project.
When:
April 13 - May 29, 2012 | Opening Reception: April 13, 2012
| 6:00 p.m.
- 8:00 p.m.

Six

The exhibit Six Stitches represents a common thread that
unifies all
seven
artists in
the show
through the
medium of
fabric. Work
in the
exhibit
includes art
quilts, dyed
fabric, a
fabric and
mixed media
purse that
stands
almost 4
feet tall
and a four
panel fabric
print. The
artists in
the show
have taken
materials
which we see
everyday and
transformed
them into
objects that
are not just
material or
crafts, but
actually
fine art.

Reads
Farewell to
Manzanar
Riverside Public Library
The
Riverside
Public
Library will
engage the
community in
reading and
discussing
Farewell to
Manzanar
by Jeanne
Wakatsuki
Houston as
part of the
Cal
Humanities'
California
Reads
project
subtitled
Searching
for
Democracy. A
touching,
funny and
tragic
memoir of
the
internment
of Japanese
Americans
during WWII,
Farewell to
Manzanar
reminds us
of a
shameful
chapter in
the history
of our state
and our
country. The
book is a
riveting
first person
telling of a
cataclysmic
time for
Japanese
Americans,
who were
imprisoned
in their own
land while
being urged
to send
their sons
to fight
overseas. It
honors the
great
dignity and
tremendous
resourcefulness
of a people
forced to
live under
the most
oppressive
of
circumstances.
The story is
a poignant
reminder
that in
moments of
national
crisis our
civil rights
can be at
most risk.
Farewell to
Manzanar
is a brisk
read that
lends itself
well to
lively
discussions
to examine
the meaning
of American
democracy.
